If you own the original pressing, I don't think you'll hear an improvement with the new cut. The new pressing isn't a disaster, but, it isn't as good as the original mastering either. I would describe the new pressing as clinical and the 1991 pressing organic. And instead we get just get more bass on the new pressing. There's a drone that is in background that appears in all the songs, binding them together. Achtung Baby broods on the 1991 pressing. Things are spread out a bit more with the new mastering, but I think it also gives too much space between the instruments. The Edges guitar solos also just come out of nowhere on the older pressing and momentarily take the spotlight away from Bono's vocal. ![]() And that bass pulls your attention away from the interplay between the vocals. He adds vocals that are just as important the lead, countering it rather than building on it. A thing really I've always liked on Achtung Baby is that the Edge doesn't really harmonize with Bono. It lingers, and it lingers without decay. This allows the instruments and vocals to step in and take center stage, building drama. It comes in and and it fades into the background. The original pressing has a more subdued bass presence. This makes the the vocals and the instruments fight for their space in the sound stage. ![]()
